Small Nuclear Reactor technology is rapidly transitioning to industrial deployment

X-energy and Talen Energy announced an agreement to evaluate gigawatt-scale deployment of X-energy’s Xe-100 small modular reactor, signalling a major step toward commercial-scale advanced nuclear power in the United States. This follows X-energy’s partnership with Japan’s IHI Corporation to build SMR supply chains, and GE Vernova–Hitachi’s new MoU to deploy the BWRX-300 across Southeast Asia. Together, these moves indicate that SMR technology is rapidly transitioning from regulatory pilot phase to industrial deployment. For energy security planners, the convergence of U.S., Japanese, and European industrial players around SMRs points to a genuinely global nuclear renaissance.
